Currently when you only have one weapon (eg an M16), there is no way to put the weapon over your shoulder on its sling, so your character can walk along with nothing in their hands.
Could I please suggest then selecting the equipped weapon in the Quick Slot Menu, that puts it back over your shoulder, or you could implement using the "Y" button to switch between weapons, which would also put an equipped weapon back onto your shoulder when pressed.
