This has happened several times I would equip pristine gear and log out for the night in a safe area guarded by fences and locked doors. I would log into damaged or badly damaged items.

Steps To Reproduce
Check inventory to make sure logging out all my grear was presitine. Look both sets of doors on a barn. Padlock the gate. Proceed to log out.
