There is currently a bug with batteries where there is an option to equip a battery but no option to combine, yet pressing circle to combine combines the battery with torches and the like however, pressing to equip the battery makes the battery disappear.

Steps To Reproduce
Put item that requires 9V battery in hand (such as flashlight). Select battery. Press triangle to equip.

Are you sure it disappears? Don't you have an other object in your inventory where the battery should have gone (a scope...)
I notice that when you press triangle to equip something the priority goes to the objects that are in your inventory and not the ones in your hand ; which is not logic I think.
