In 'Automatic' mode, the lander software that picks up the terrain and follows it to the landing site cannot pick up a ground surface if it's vertical descent is over the area outside the detailed/main terrain map. Instead it maintains descent speed and falls right through the map and keeps on falling, eventually depleting the fuel in the landing thrusters.
